Vocabulary

heat transfer:The movement of energy from a warmer object to a cooler object.
radiation:The transfer of energy through empty space.
conduction:Heat transfer by direct contact of particles of matter.
convection:Heat transfer by the movement of a heated fluid.
density:is the measure of how much mass there is in a volume of a substance.
convection currents:is the flow that transfers heat within a fluid

Outline

Radiation

  • Heat transfer with no direct contact.
  • An example of Radiation is the heat you feel around a flame or open fire or from the sun.

Conduction

  • Particles near the heat source vibrate faster as they are heated, so they bump into other particles and heat them too.
  • An example of conduction is a spoon in a hot pot.

Convection

  • When a liquid or a gas is heated particles move faster.
  • Particles spread apart as they move faster
  • If gas or liquid is cooled, particles move slower and settle closely together.
  • An example of convection is the bottom of a pot being heated get hot it expands and becomes less dense.
  • Differences of temperature and density within a fluid cause convection currents.
